Sour service drill pipe is used in well drilling applications. These pipes can either be welded or be seamless in formation. As the drilling process intensifies the possibility of hitting H2S increases. This may, in turn, lead to hydrogen-induced cracking in this sour environment. However, the presence of the sour service pipeline ensures that the hydrogen is kept under check and improves the mechanical properties of the line. These pipes are carbon steel pipes that are customized for sour services. The tensile strength of these pipes ranges from 415 MPa to 760 MPa and the yield strength is from 245 MPa- 635 MPa depending on the grade of the pipes.

The carbon steel pipe for sour service comes in 3/8 inches to 30 inches with different coatings. They are treated for heat and sub-zero temperatures. The seamless API 5L grade B pipe is mostly preferred; in sour gas services. Due to the acute shortage of the above pipe ERW, pipes are used as a replacement. The erw sour service has so far been able to control the service as long as quality control is maintained.
